Apologetics? Why?

November 25, 2009

1 Peter 3:15b Always be ready to give a logical defense to anyone who asks you to account for the hope that is in you, but do it courteously and respectfully.”

I would like to begin by explaining what Christian Apologetics is. It is a field of Christian theology (study of God) that aims to present a rational basis for the Christian faith, defend the faith against objections (Jude 3), and expose the flaws of other world views. In other words apologists defend the faith against anything that opposes, is opposite, or contrary to the Word of God. Why defend you might ask, because if God is sovereign, and He is, and if He is all powerful, all knowing, holy and just. If He is intelligence, love, wisdom, and indeed He is, then His word must be at equal premise as all His attributes. In fact God places His word above His name, the proof is in Psalm 138:2 “For thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.” God is subject to His word; thus if God says it, He must do it. The proof for that is in Numbers 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” So we can then extract that God’s word is the absolute standard, rule, statute, and precept and that anything that is not in accordance to His word is indeed false and must be debunked or exposed. Satan disguises himself as an Angel of light; he uses schematic blueprints, wily devices, and lies in order to deceive the multitudes. He uses other religions, philosophies, and thoughts to keep man away from God by making these things sound like the truth, because deception cannot be deception unless it has elements of truth; therefore every Christian is to become an apologetic to reason with those who are in darkness and bring them into the light.

The Apostle Paul in Acts 26:2 before Festus and Agrippa said “I make my defense” he was using the Greek word apologia meaning in defense of, so any apologete must be a defender of Christianity. Christendom would not be where it is today if it wasn’t for apologetics, a prime example would be Martin Luther and his 95 thesis. His defense of the bible and Christianity resulted in one of the most pivotal points in Christianity; the Protestant Reformation, which changed the face of Christianity for ever.
